Five on Friday: Looking Forward To

Friday, April 4, 2014

The last five months we've been living in a temporary apartment.  And in all honesty, it hasn't been that bad.  There have definitely been some major perks including the ability to save money to put towards the down payment on our new house, having a smaller footprint to keep clean, the low maintenance living, and the many conveniences (i.e. onsite gym, pool, dog washing station, etc.)

However, with every perk, there are the drawbacks.  Or better said, the things that I miss -- the things that I most look forward to when we move into our new house.  So what better topic than what I look forward to most about moving into our new home.

THE GOOD LIFE BLOG

# 1.  Making it Feel Like a Home

Our apartment is currently fairly sparse.  We've hung a few pictures, but not many.  Half of our decorations are in storage.  The walls are a boring shade of beige.  And really, it just doesn't feel all that homey.

Goodness knows I've been pinning a ton of things that I want to do in terms of decorating and making it feel like a home. But it just doesn't seem worth it.

So I'll save my time, energy and money for the house.

And in the meantime, keep on pinning.

# 2. A Yard

I never realized how much we took this for granted.  Until it was hovering above zero with snow on the ground and the dog had to go to the bathroom.  On a leash.  With his owner (often times me).  Or until you have a toddler, who has boundless energy and just needs to run.  On something other than laminate floors or concrete.

How I miss grilling out (going downstairs to use the communal grill is not appealing to me).  I miss sitting outside relaxing.

# 3. Only One Flight of Stairs

Why did I think it would be an okay idea to live on the third floor of an apartment?  With said dog and toddler nonetheless.  Its hard enough to get up the flights of stairs on my own.  Nevermind when I am toting one of them or a load of groceries.

However, there is one big perk -- my legs are definitely stronger and its probably helping to keep the baby weight gain to a minimum.

# 4. Organization

Initially, I would have thought keeping a small two bedroom apartment clean and organized would have been easy.

And so may have been the case if you had the appropriate amount of stuff and appropriately sized furniture for the space.  Clearly, we have failed on both of these.  We have entirely too much stuff and not enough space for it.  Thus, organization is a pain.  And because there is stuff everywhere, keeping it clean is equally as painful.

i cannot wait to have a house where everything "fits" and has a home.  I think one of my major maternity leave projects, other than bonding with Littlest Miss, will be to get our house uber organized.  Container Store here I come (or realistically the cheaper alternative)

# 5.  Space

Sometimes you just need space.  Space to watch TV without worrying that it will wake up both your husband and child through the thin walls.  Space to relax.  Space to do work in silence.  Space to eat at an actual table and not on a small Ikea art table in your living room everynight.

Don't get me wrong, I love that having so little space means that we spend lots of quality time together.  However, more space will be nice.

  1. Stairs and no yard would do us in. Surely one of the dogs would drag me (and the toddler) down the stairs and kill us all. Although a dog washing station does sound awesome. :)
